The Present Is A Present

As cliché as that sounds, it’s true. If you think about it, every moment that we’re alive is almost a miracle, every breath we take is a blessing, and sometimes we waste this time planning for our futures or thinking about the past. Some of us daydream, some of us reminisce, but how many of us are actively trying to live “in the moment” and consciously thinking about what’s going on right now, this very second.

I admit that I’m a daydreamer. I love imagining how I want my life to be, what I want to be doing, and how I want to look, but I’m trying to rein it in. I want to practice what I preach and live in the now. That doesn’t mean forgetting about the past or not thinking about the future. Of course it’s okay to reminisce and make plans, but that shouldn’t take up all of your time or occupy too much space in your mind. I feel like people forget that thinking about what’s happening as it’s happening is a conscious activity. Maybe it’s just me, but I have to work to stay in the present. The present is all we really have, because the past already happened and the future is never guaranteed. I don’t mean to sound morbid or anything like that, but those are the facts.

Living in the moment can really de-stress a person, that is, unless the moment is a stressful one. Making a conscious effort to think about the now is almost like constantly meditating. Assessing what’s going on right now is all we really need to do right now in terms of unconscious thoughts. I’m getting dizzy thinking about how important the present is! What’s more important than the here and now? Nothing, right now! Chew on that.
