Oh The Places You Will Go

Life is all about the little wins. If you focus on where you want to be instead of where you are or how far you’ve come, you’re bound to be miserable. You’re bound to compromise yourself to achieve these lofty goals that you know in your head take time but you also think won’t take as much time for you.

Like Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” Every day is its own little life with a beginning, middle, and end. My focus for next year is to remember that and to live in the moment – life is so much more fun and full that way!

The desire to stay present has become all the more important with everything that I have going on in my life and everything that I want to have going on in my life. I’ve said this before, and I will say it again – I’m a Dreamer with a capital D. My toxic trait is that I’m always thinking ahead to where I want to be, what I want to be doing, and how I want to be living. I have the hardest time living in the moment, which can explain why my memory is so bad.

Honestly, I have no idea how to change that. I’m working on being more cognizant of when I’m doing it so that I can redirect my thoughts to the present, and I’m also trying to be more intentional about how I spend my time – romanticize my life and all that so that the present is interesting enough to hold my attention.

My dreams still dance at the periphery of my consciousness at all times, though, which keep me focused in a way and make for targeted moves. I live my life within the context of those goals, working to make progress with every decision I make. A ton of stuff is still out of reach, but I’m holding on tight to the things are that are.

So even if you have yet to reach your destination, or that goal you’ve been chasing seems to keep moving farther away as you head towards it, or everyone around you seems to have already arrived, don’t forget to enjoy the journey you’re on and be present for the moments you’re in, because you’re going to need those memories one day. When you’ve finally achieved that thing you’ve been going after for however many weeks, months, years, wouldn’t it be great to have a trip worth remembering?
