Name’s Not Holly, But I Sure Am Jolly

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

It’s my absolute favorite time of year! As far as I’m concerned, nothing beats Christmas – not the Fourth of July, not Thanksgiving, and definitely not Halloween. There’s just something about this holiday that makes my soul sing.

My favorite part about Christmas is spending time with family. Family is everything and more to me, so a holiday in which we all have time off work and come together to love on one another is very me. This Christmas is especially special, since we’re all spending it in Africa!

That’s right folks, I’m in the Mother Land. As you may or may not know, I am first generation African American, meaning both of my parents were born and raised in Africa – Sierra Leone to be specific. I have finally made the trip to the place my parents once called home, and it feels like being reborn.

I don’t want to sound like that girl, but the air is fresher here, the sky is more blue, and the grass is greener! Being so indelibly American, I was highkey worried that I was going to hate being away from the creature comforts that I’m more than used to – I would go so far as to say that I take them for granted. Not going to lie, I miss them like crazy, but it’s not like we’re staying in the bush (IYKYK). There’s electricity most of the time and running water; things just aren’t as readily available as I’m used to.

Despite all of that, I couldn’t be having a better time if I tried! I’m learning so much about my heritage and culture, and I’m spending a ton of time with my family. For me, it doesn’t get any better than that.

Hug your loved ones tight this holiday season, because family is the greatest gift of all.
