They say with age comes wisdom, and as true as that proves to be time and time again, I think that old adage should be taken with a grain of salt. Obviously as you get older you accumulate knowledge that those who are younger don’t tend to have, but you can’t simply assume you know more just because you are older, especially in this day and age with so much new technology that younger generations, mine included, have grown up with and thusly are more familiar with than our elders.
This idea that there is a lot to learn from the youths of the world has been top of mind for me as I look to make a career transition. Going from customer service to marketing introduces a steep learning curve that I’m more than happy to ride out. As I apply for entry level position after entry level position, I recognize that there will be younger people above me that I will have to take direction from and defer to. I recognize that I will be working my way up to a position that is currently held by people my age. I recognize that I may be the oldest person in my role.
In recognizing all of this, I have nothing but hope for my future, excitement for the new things I’m going to learn, and peace for the journey I’m embarking on. It is incredibly difficult to start over, but it is more difficult to be stuck, never moving forward or creating the life I want to live. It is with that mindset that I do the hard work of making this transition, taking every rejection in stride and continually strengthening my skills as I pursue this next chapter of my career.
It’s never too late to make a change!
